Manuel de Pedrolo (Segarra, 1918 – Barcelona, 1990). Winner of the Prize of Honor of Catalan Letters, he is one of the most outstanding––and certainly most prolific and widely read––authors of Catalan literature in the twentieth century. Author, dramatist, essayist, poet, and translator, Pedrolo worked in all genres and collaborated with the majority of the Catalan-language newspapers of his time. As a translator, he focused on contemporary French and North American literature. He produced over a hundred books, with story anthologies like Crèdits humans (Human Credits, 1956), dramas like Homes i No (Men and No, 1957) and the novels Cendra per Martina (Ash for Martina, 1952), Totes les bèsties de càrrega (All the Beasts of Burden, 1965) and Mecanoscrit del segon origen (Manuscript of the Second Origin, 1974), as well as the novel cycle Temps Obert (Open Time), which encompasses eleven books.
