Perplexity is a book about the moment when two human groups, or two people, are unable to understand each other and are left baffled by the expectations of the other. To explain this, the author entwines three axes. The first is the experience of living in New York for ten years -the period from Obama to Trump-, with a description of daily activity, people and life in New York and the United States. The second is about politics and history based on specific scenes, cultural realities and politicians. And the third, the author's inner reflections, with references to the past, to doubts, hopes and failures, to readings and facts that make us grow, to perplexity itself.
Once I asked my grandmother Teresina if she believed in God. She said, yes. “And what happens when we die,” I asked her. Perplexity is a moment suspended in time, almost eternal, fully spiritual. Behind the incapacity to imagine that the other person is defending their world out of love, behind the belief that the other person can only be operating in bad faith or is just naive, there is also the will to defend your world with your love, because a world is as much a memory as it is an aspiration. At the heart of perplexity there is discomfort in the face of a contradiction, in the face of an absurdity.
